My friend Judee Peterson is in town from a small community in western Iowa.  I tried to call her the other day just as she was about to go under for a root canal.  Her husband whispered to me that she'd been in great pain for days, and swollen and was not "available to talk right at this moment."

But, artists need pain, right, to really be able to communicate their art?  Hang in there, Judee, Judee, Judee – all this tooth discomfort will really help you hone your craft.

So, these are samples of Judee's work.  They're tiny here, but huge in real life.

Judee's stuff is creative and beautiful. but what you cannot see here is the meticulousness with which she does her work.  Her attention to the tiniest, itty-bittiest detail almost does her in with every piece.  She swears each time she will quit putting in so much effort and just throw stuff together, but she can't.  So there is this right-brained, creative, artistic side, driven by this left-brained, overly painstaking and scrupulous side.  She is at war within herself.

Which is funny because if you know Judee at all – it describes the whole of her.  She is this refined elder's wife, a godly woman respected in her community, hair always perfectly in place.  The other side that drew me in is zany and silly and just downright ornery and gives me the overwhelming urge to muss her hair up – which she hates above all things.
