Why I hate the book, “Why Men Hate Church”

Posted on Thursday 28 February 2008 by Jeanie @ 6:33 am
Filed under: Stuff I actually think

I started this post April 2007.  I have written and deleted, re-written and deleted - thousands of words.  Everytime I start, I get so grrrrrrrr, I have to start over in a calmer state.  I don't think God is going to let me actually verbalize it for awhile, especially since I almost belted a guy in the coffee line at church when he told me I was the problem (there was actually a Men's Sunday Morning Bible Study using this this this annoying book!! eeks!) when I suggested that instead of trying to call (American Western Christian) men to their "rightful place of leadership in the church" perhaps we should call them to servanthood?

I am thinking of Jesus Christ, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, on His knees with a towel around His waist…

Isn't the way up in the Kingdom of God, down?…Jeanie

NOTE TO SELF:  End this here, quickly and quietly…for nowInnocent

    • Another thing to keep in mind is that God's Spirit has to draw his people to his church.  There are some days I want to throw my hands up at God's body.  But his Spirit conveys his passion for his people to me and I am rejuvinated with love for his Bride.  Making church more or less "manly" isn't going to matter in the grand scheme of things.  The passion the man (or woman) has for God's church will be what draws or doesn't draw people to him.

    • Yes, big deep breaths! I totally understand what you're saying and I haven't read the book. But know what you're saying.

    • I'm uncomfortable in a leadership position. I'm a behind the scenes kind of guy. I'm much more comfortable serving. It's satisfting to me to help people. If your gifted in leadership then great lead on. I'll follow you and serve in the way I'm called to.

    • I'm a man. And I DON'T hate church. This stems from a misconception and misinterpretation that all men think about is sports and sex, not necessarily in that order… We do think about those things, but that's not all we are capable of thinking about. This reduces us to little more than Neanderthals and primates. I am insulted by the premise that in order to be a Christian in today's Western Culture that you have to be less than masculine. Have we gotten to the point in our society that we really believe that the Western church is a true picture of the body of Christ? I have been a pastor now for over 30 years. I've been around the block and witnessed a lot of "waves" that have rolled in and retreated. I have been in a variety of denominations that we referred to as "camps"; and like the announcer on League of Their Own - I've seen enough to know that I've seen too much. Why do we feel that we have to sell Christianity like our only course for salvation has come off the Home Shopping Network? Why men hate church… Why indeed. Because we don't have enough Harley give aways in the foyer? Because we haven't installed that big screen TV on the platform so that we can attract "the guys" to watch the Super Bowl and then secretly slip in a little something about Jesus dying for their sorry behinds? Why men hate church? Because they hate their wives? Is that what it's come down to? I don't go to church because my overly religious, whiny, over emotional wife wants me too? I would submit to you, that if a church has to get that type of a husband through the doors with the promise of a pastor who wears a jersey and has to be called "coach"; that there is a lot more that is going on in that marriage that needs to be fixed beside having a Denver Bronco cornerback come and speak. Why men hate church? Not macho enough for you? Guess what, arm chair quarterback, consider a few guys: Matthew - run through with a sword. Mark died in Alexandria, Egypt, after being dragged by horses through the streets until he was dead. Luke was hanged in Greece. John was boiled in oil but didn't die and so they had to throw him on an island by himself. Peter was crucified upside down on an x-shaped cross, he told his tormentors that he felt unworthy to die in the same way that Jesus Christ had died. James the Just, the leader of the church in Jerusalem, was thrown over a hundred feet down from the southeast pinnacle of the Temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. When they discovered that he survived the fall, his enemies beat James to death with a fuller's club. This was the same pinnacle where Satan had taken Jesus during the Temptation. James the Greater, a son of Zebedee, beheaded at Jerusalem.  Bartholomew, also know as Nathanael, was a missionary to Asia. was flayed to death by a whip. Jude, the brother of Jesus, was killed with arrows when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. Matthias, the apostle chosen to replace the traitor Judas Iscariot, was stoned and then beheaded. The apostle Paul was tortured and then beheaded by Nero at Rome in A.D. 67. Shall I go on, how about now? Wednesday, April 18, 2007,three Christian evangelists in the east Turkey city of Malatya (46 year old German missionary and father of three, Tilman Geske; 35 year old ex-Muslim, pastor of the local church, and father of two Necati Aydin; and Ugur Yudsel, a younger, ex-Muslim, already engaged to be married) were tortured and beheaded in front of their families and thrown out a window! All for the cause of Christ! Give me a break! Don't use some slick program with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders to get the macho men in the door! Men, stand up and be men and see that this is no religion for the weak of heart! We are men of America that go around the world defending the innocent and oppressed! Christian men, act like it!!!!! I attend a church of around 3000 and I can name man after man that stand shoulder to shoulder beside me each Sunday that are their because they want a deeper relationship with God. They are striving to be better father's and husbands and citizens. And I don't know of very many who would not lay down their lives for their families and Christianity… Am I wrong???? Challenge me. I would say more, but lunch is over… Lucky for all of us…

    • I know I've already commented on this but I needed to respond to Daves blog addendum. I love the Broncos but I gladly miss games to go to church. God doesn't let me down but the Broncos do! I work with a bunch of neanderthals and since I cannot change the channel on the TV at work I'm forced to watch ESPN constantly. The guys sit there mesmerized by the same replay over and over again. It doesn't matter what sport it is, they watch. I guess this book wants to reach these guys, but where does the sport addicted attitude stop. Do we have the ushers at the begining of the service shoot tshirts out into the crowd or at communion have juice, bread and hot wings. At some point in time the guys that a attracted by this book will see that church isn't the same as going to the sports bar get bored and move on.
